Boat Handling Under Power

What Governs How a Boat Handles
Momentum carries a boat a surprisingly long way. The only brake is the opposite gear — reverse to stop a boat going ahead, and vice versa. Every manoeuvre plan starts from that fact.
Most yacht props are right-handed (clockwise from astern): going ahead the stern nudges to starboard, bow to port; going astern it reverses — stern walks to port — and the effect is much stronger, because the prop wash no longer streams over the rudder.
In reverse, water flow over the rudder is poor, so the helm answers slowly and transverse thrust dominates. Plan turns to work with the screw — with a right-hand prop, favour turns to starboard.
This is where transverse thrust stops being a nuisance and becomes the tool that spins the boat on her own central pivot point in a fairway barely longer than the hull. With a right-hand prop, pivot to starboard: put the wheel hard to starboard and leave it there, then work the throttle in alternating bursts —
- Short burst AHEAD — prop wash over the hard-over rudder kicks the stern to port, swinging the bow to starboard before the boat gathers way
- Short burst ASTERN — the rudder goes quiet, but transverse thrust takes over and walks the stern to port again: the bow keeps swinging starboard while the burst kills your headway
- Repeat — ahead, astern, ahead — and she rotates in her own length with almost no travel over the ground
Both halves of the cycle turn the boat the same way — that is the key point. Keep the bursts short (throttle drives rotation, not speed) and never wind the wheel across mid-turn.
Wind, Tide & Current
Two words first. Topsides are the sides of the hull above the waterline; draught (or draft) is how deep the hull sits below it. A cabin cruiser has tall topsides and little draught — lots of boat exposed to the wind, and little underwater to grip the water and resist being pushed sideways. So the wind blows her about like a sail. Even a sailing yacht with the sails put away still catches enough wind on her mast and rigging to be pushed off course; the sideways push the wind gives you is called leeway. Meanwhile the water itself may be flowing — tide or current — which shifts your actual track over the seabed and changes your speed over the ground.
- Wind on the bow pushes the head off — expect to steer against it
- High topsides + shallow draught = maximum blow-around
- Small boats make generous leeway — the coxswain corrects course and speed
- A moored or anchored boat lies head to the strongest of wind or current, so it shows you the direction of whatever is running
- Approach into the strongest force — it's your brake
- In confined water, decide before entering: what will the wind do to me the instant I stop?
- With a right-hand prop, build plans around right-hand turns
- In a marina, too much momentum causes damage; crossing a current, enough momentum holds your track. Manage it on purpose, not by accident
Coming Alongside
The standard arrival: approach at 20–30° to the dock with just enough way for steerage, upwind if you can. As the bow closes the wharf, neutral — then a touch of reverse, which both stops her and (right-hand prop) tucks the stern neatly alongside. Lines and fenders ready before you start; one crew designated to step ashore. Test your approach angle:
Too flat and the wind owns you before you reach the dock; too steep and you arrive bow-first with nothing left to swing the stern in.
Docking lines revision — a boat is properly secured with four lines: a bow line led forward, a stern line led aft, and two taut springs (bow-to-aft-of-midships, stern-to-forward-of-midships) that stop her surging fore and aft. Where lines live on the dock, crew stepping ashore can simply pass them up to the deck.
Departing a Dock
Leave forwards when you can, but the wind decides the method and the order you let the lines go. Drag the wind around the boat: the line to hold, the end that swings free, and the way out all change.
Twin Engines & Trim Tabs
Two pieces of equipment that change how a powerboat handles. Both are worth understanding before you drive a boat fitted with them.
A twin-engine (or twin-screw) boat has two separate engines, each turning its own propeller — one to port of the centreline, one to starboard. ("Screw" is the old word for propeller.) The two propellers counter-rotate — spin in opposite directions — and that has two useful effects:
- Prop-walk cancels out. One propeller tries to walk the stern to port, the other to starboard, so the sideways kick you fight in a single-engine boat (Lesson 1) all but disappears.
- You can steer on the engines alone. One engine ahead and the other astern spins the boat on the spot — she turns in her own length. In tight quarters you steer more with the two throttles than with the wheel.
Running normally, keep both engines at the same RPM (revs) so their thrust is balanced. She then holds her course with little rudder — which means less drag and better fuel economy.
A trim tab is a small adjustable metal plate hinged along the bottom edge of the transom (the flat back end of the boat) — usually one on each side. From the helm you tilt them down a few degrees with a switch, and the water flowing past pushes up on them, which lifts the stern and presses the bow down. Two reasons you'd want that:
- Level fore-and-aft. As a fast boat accelerates, the bow rises on its own. Too much and she runs nose-high — unstable, and you can't see over the bow. Tabs push the bow back down so she runs flat and settles onto the plane. (On the plane = going fast enough to skim across the surface instead of ploughing through it — Lesson 6.)
- Level side-to-side. Tilt one tab down more than the other to correct a boat leaning to port or starboard from wind or uneven load.
Planing & High-Speed Turns
At low speed a powerboat sits in the water, pushing it aside as she goes — hard work for the engine, and the water's resistance caps her speed. Give her enough power and she climbs up onto her own bow wave and skims across the surface instead: this is planing ("on the plane"). It takes most of the engine's output to get her up there, but once she's planing you can ease the throttle back and she'll stay up, running faster on less power. (Some hulls can't do this at all — a heavy displacement hull, like a trawler or a sailing yacht, always ploughs through the water, and its top speed is fixed by its length. Only a light, flat-bottomed planing hull will climb up and skim.) Whenever you're at speed: brief the crew before any change of speed or direction, keep a full lookout for traffic, other boats' wash and submerged objects, and don't try to plane in rough water.
Another boat's wake ("wash") is a moving wave. A small one: cross with everyone holding on. A large one: slow down first, get the bow up, and cross it at about 45° rather than head-on or beam-on — that lets the hull ride over it instead of slamming or rolling. Feather the throttle through each crest to keep the bow up, then resume speed once you're through.
Speed hides how violent a turn can be, so set up for each one:
- Warn the crew and confirm you have the space
- Scan for wash, traffic and submerged obstructions
- Trim the bow down before you turn — a bow-down hull has more of itself in the water to grip and hold the turn
- Turn smoothly, never so hard that the propeller ventilates (spins in aerated water) and lets go
- Stay inside the hull's and engine's design limits — a fast, sharp turn can trip a small boat over
Heavy Weather, Engine Failure & Mooring Buoys
Heavy-weather driving is throttle work, wave by wave. Match speed to the sea — usually that means slower. Waves generally run with the wind, with one famous exception: wind against tide, which stacks them short and steep.
Trim down, controlled power up the face, ease the throttle at the crest so you don't fly off it, accelerate gently down the back to lift the bow for the trough, repeat. In short seas there's no time for that rhythm — take the waves at 30–45° and zig-zag toward the destination.
Large breaking beam seas can roll a small boat — steer between the breakers, or power over the crest / turn and outrun one that has you on its downwind side. Following seas are the most dangerous: a breaker on the transom kills prop grip, slews you beam-on (broach), and capsize follows. Match your speed to the waves; if you're surfing toward burying the bow, even a burst of reverse is fair play. Avoid shallow harbour bars in a big following sea — shoaling water makes the waves higher, confused and violent.
The usual culprits are boring: no fuel, or dirty fuel. Defence is maintenance — service schedule, fuel/oil/filter checks, a real toolbox aboard. If it happens: cellphone, VHF or SSB to call for help (match the kit to your distance offshore) and signalling devices ready. Single-engine boats get no second chance — maintain accordingly and dock with extra care.
Approach slowly, into the strongest of wind, waves or current. Close to the buoy: a gentle touch of reverse to stall the last of your way, neutral, lift the mooring painter aboard and make fast. Leaving, back away so the prop stays clear of the line. Many authorities prefer moorings over anchors to protect the seabed — use the field when it's there.
