Testimonials
“Happy Sailing’s Grenada course was a highlight of 2024. Evan and Ken started the ashore knowledge component well before we departed and all the planning and preparation set us up for success on the 46’ Dufour charter boat.
By the time we arrived in Grenada, all the students knew the trainers and our crew jelled quickly. Each day started with a sail briefing so we understood the skills to be developed and practiced. By starting the day early, and preparing meals ahead of time, we were able to focus on our sailing skills and work through the curriculum by mid-afternoon. This meant the rest of the day was fun social time and we had a chance to swim/snorkel, visit local towns, dine or whatever. Snorkeling at Sandy Island, Carriacou, and the BBQ dinner on the beach at Tobago Cays were just two of the memorable moments.
By the end of the course, we had all developed good seamanship skills, understood the boat systems and life aboard, and had begun to develop our navigation and sail planning skills. All of this was expertly guided and facilitated by Evan as Director, and Ken Bourne as Lead Instructor. I highly recommend this course. It was a peak learning experience for everyone involved.” - Stephen
Happy Sailing's live aboard course in Grenada was the perfect blend of fun and education. I gained so much knowledge and confidence about what is involved in chartering and sailing. Ken and Evan take care of all the details and are there to answer any questions that might pop up along the way, so you can focus on learning as you vacation. Highly reccomend this course if you are curious about sailing and have a thirst for adventure! - Hilary
I wholeheartedly recommend Happy Sailing to anyone interested in pursuing their sailing education. My experience sailing with Evan and Ken during a week-long trip from Grenada was nothing short of exceptional.

Before setting sail, we engaged in ten weeks of thorough online instruction, which prepared us well for both our beginner and intermediate cruiser certifications. This structured approach allowed us to master the foundational material and focus on advancing our skills while aboard the sailing yacht chartered from Sunsail.

Evan’s expertise and passion for teaching were evident throughout the course. He created an engaging and supportive learning environment, ensuring we felt confident and capable. Ken, as our captain, provided invaluable insights into navigating the beautiful waters of Grenada, enhancing our practical experience.

The combination of comprehensive pre-sailing lessons and hands-on instruction made this journey not only educational but also thoroughly enjoyable. I left the course feeling accomplished and excited about my future in sailing.

I highly recommend Happy Sailing to anyone looking to learn and gain sailing experience with a professional and fun sailing school. - Don Fraser, Class of Spring 2024

Ken Bourne

I grew up in Atlantic Canada where I developed my passion for the Ocean. My first sailing experience was wind surfing about 25 years ago. When I moved to Ottawa, I began sailing Albacores, Lasers, Sharks and Hobie cats on the Ottawa river. I did my first charter in the BVIs and fell in love with larger cruising sailboats; the salt water was calling me back. I spent many winter vacations chartering, joining flotillas and sailing on the ocean. In 2019 I finally bought my own Cruising sailboat and sailed from Lake Ontario, down the East coast of Canada and the US to the Bahamas.
I currently spend my winters sailing in the south.
I have accumulated thousands of hours sailing in the Great lakes and have logged over 3500 nautical miles coastal cruising. When I retired, I decided I wanted to share my passion for sailing and became a certified instructor.

Instructor and School Director
My sailing journey began in 2012 when I watched a sailboat cruising along the horizon off the shores of Prince Edward County and thought how incredible life could be for a sailor. I longed for a sense of freedom and relying on my wits and my skill. Fast forward to 2021, I had been sailing in the Bay of Quinte for 9 years on my Catalina 25 and was ready for my next challenge. I embarked on a week long sail training course in the Sea of Cortez that changed my life. I wanted a school of my own, was ready for a bigger boat and was ready to begin my instructor training. We purchased a 2011 Bavaria 36 in Upstate NY in Lake Champlain, sailed her down to the Eerie Canal and brought her home across Lake Ontario. Meanwhile I had completed my Sail Canada instructor training and the rest is history! I believe anyone has what it takes to become a sailor at any point in their life. I am an example of that passion and I want to share that passion with you!
