Frequently Asked Questions
What is included?

All courses include professional instruction, course materials, and use of the boat. For liveaboard programs, your private cabin and meals onboard are also included (alcohol not included). For day sailing in Prince Edward County, snacks and refreshments are provided, and you are welcome to bring a lunch.

Do I need a prerequisite?

Not always. Beginners can join the Start Keelboat or Basic Cruising course without prior training. To enroll in Intermediate Cruising, you’ll need to have completed Basic Cruising, plus VHF Radio and Basic Coastal Navigation certifications (you have one year to complete those if you’re missing them).

Can I join my partner?

Yes! Couples, friends, and family are welcome. You can share a private cabin on liveaboards or sail together for a day. Both of you will be students, but you may choose the level of challenge you want to take on.

What if I have experience already?

If you’re already a sailor, you can challenge a Sail Canada standard. We’ll evaluate your skills on board, and if you demonstrate the required competencies, you can earn certification without repeating material you already know.

What if I don’t want full certification?

Everyone aboard is a student, but you can qualify at an introductory crew level. This requires only safe conduct aboard, a basic understanding of sailing terms, and participation as crew. It’s a great way to learn the ropes without pressure.

Do I need to bring gear?

We provide all safety equipment and learning materials. For liveaboards, bring soft luggage, personal items, and clothing suited to the season. A packing list will be sent to you before departure.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety always comes first. We will adapt the plan for the day to make the most of the conditions. Courses continue unless conditions are unsafe, in which case we reschedule or adjust activities.

Will I get a certification?

If you are registered for a Sail Canada course and complete the required skills, you can earn certification at crew or skipper level depending on your performance and preparedness. At a minimum, you can qualify at the introductory level by demonstrating safe conduct.

Are there extra costs?

Liveaboard courses include meals, but not alcohol. In the Bahamas, participants cover flights, transfers, and any shore activities. In Prince Edward County, you’re responsible for transportation to the marina.

What if I need to cancel?

We have a clear cancellation policy that balances fairness with the realities of running a sailing program. Please review our Payment & Cancellation Policy page for full details.

I have dietary needs. Can these be accommodated?

Yes. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions if we know in advance. Just let us know when you book.

Do I need to be in good shape?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but sailing is hands-on and active. You should be comfortable moving around the boat, climbing up and down companionway stairs, and participating in normal onboard tasks.
